G & R Wrenn Ltd, Basildon launched the Wrenn micromodel "N" gauge range in 1968 to satisfy the up and coming need for a smaller gauge model railway market. Priority was given to the UK however Europe and North America was within the vision. They collaborated with Lima, Italy, and as most of you know the products are Lima in Wrenn packaging. The main picture illustrate a very small snapshot of the range which covered Sets, Locomotives (including Diesels/Electric),Coaches, Wagons, Trackwork and Accessories. Most of the UK models tended to favour B.R. Liveries for the above and Private Owner Wagons. The second picture highlights the RARE Item 319 Swiss Railways Dining Car with dummy pantograph. A total of 225 items were offered sub - divided as follows::
Category 2 200 Series Locomotives (30)
Category 3 300 Series Coaches (48)
Category 4 400/700 Series Wagons (70)
Category 5 500 Series Trackwork (all steel rail - plastic sleepers) - (47)
Category 6 700 Series Accessories (7)
The collaboration with Lima included some other scales, and concluded in 1977. During the collaboration Lima continued independently to supply its Lima packaged products into the UK market so to this day I wonder why G & R Wrenn accepted this. Was the investment in new N gauge tooling costs to high for the vision, did the Wrenn brothers George and Richard disagree, I suspect we will never know.
